8 Things To Do During A Power Outage

2014/11/26

BLACK“And God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light, but the Electricity Board said He would have to wait until Thursday to be connected.” – Spike Milligan

  1. Find Fire
Call up a friend or family member who owns a fireplace because there is nothing more fun than crowding around a fire in the living room with blankets and hot chocolate. The light and smell of a real wood burning fire cannot be beat when it comes to warming up.
  2. Scavenge for Supplies
It may be a good idea to ask someone with power if you can borrow some candles or flashlights if you don’t already have any on hand. During a power outage it’s easy to lose track of time as well so make sure you have a few clocks that run on batteries. Speaking of batteries, maybe run to the store and get some, you don’t know how long you’ll have to wait.
  3. Forage for Sustenance
Or you know…food. It’s probably a good idea to take a trip to the supermarket and grab some crackers, bread, peanut butter and other things that don’t need to be refrigerated. You’d be surprised at how many things you may enjoy that don’t require an icebox, or what you kids call a “fridge.”
  4. Find Shelter
Go hang out at a friend or family members house even if they don’t have power either. It’s a good time to catch up as there are very little distractions keeping you from having that conversation you’ve been meaning to have. It’s a perfect time for a fist fight.
  5. Be wary of the elements
If you decide to get out move about by clearing the drive way of snow or brushing off the car to go out make sure you’re wearing your extra-nonslip boots, there is nothing worse than slipping on ice and besides hurting yourself you’ll also just look silly falling over.
  6. Cling to candle light
It’s nice to have light around your house, use it to  your advantage and have a candle lit dinner or play a board game by candle light. It’s always fun when you get to pull out the matches for any occasion…or maybe I just like fire.
  7. Keep spirits up
Eventually you will get bored so feel free to experiment, read some stories out loud by candle light when it gets dark, or play a murder mystery dinner, there are so many options that we rarely look at because there is an app for it now.
  8. Become a leader
Of course the first step to any of this is standing up and taking charge of the situation whatever it may be. The reaction when the power goes out is, “I’m sure it’ll come back on shortly…” and while all the other people are waiting in the dark it’s up to you to put your plan into motion. You deserve a vacation away from Facebook anyway.
