Film Review: Carnage

From AndYouSmiled

No… not the fictional Marvel comic book villain Carnage. I’m talking about Roman Polanski’s Carnage, a fresh comedy (adapted from the play God of Carnage) starring Jody Foster, John C. Reilly, Christopher Waltz & Kate Winslet.

This film had limited release back in 2011, and it is a bit of a shame since it was quite well done and deserves a broader audience.

The plot, you ask?

Two pairs of parents hold a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a fight, though as their time together progresses, increasingly childish behavior throws the evening into chaos. ~ IMDB

Simple? Quite. But oh so entertaining! This movie opens & closes with a shot of a playground, but the entire rest of the movie is filmed in Penelope & Michael Longstreet’s (Jody Foster & John C. Reilly’s) Brooklyn apartment. From the living room, to the kitchen, to the bathroom, to the hallway by the elevator, this is the entire set. And besides the shots of the kids in the playground and a random extra in the apartment hallway… Foster, Reilly, Waltz & Winslet make up the entire cast.

This is a great film, with realistic humour. It’s not going for cheap jokes, but instead finding the comedy in real human behaviour. Just watch this film, and tell me you don’t see aspects of your family/friends personalities come out in these characters (or even yourself). No, I’m not saying that these characters will totally embody someone you know, but I bet a part of them will.

Another great thing about this film? It’s short. The film itself is only 80 minutes… it’s a perfect ”filler” film. What do I mean by that? Simple. Do you have evening plans, but and hour and a half to kill before you have to leave and you’re already ready to go? Is it getting close to your regular bed time and you’re not quite tired yet…and you’d like to watch a movie, but can’t commit to the average 2-2.5hr film? Then watch a filler film! Or should I say, watch this filler film!!! It’s light, it’s funny, and I guarantee it will keep you entertained.

So check out Carnage. I promise you won’t regret it. And if you do? We probably don’t have the same taste…and you might want to check out a different blog for movie advice!
